MUPH
+ PLUTONIC/Optamus
Friday, April 17, 2009
Rosemount Hotel, North Perth, Western Australia
THREE albums, still solid. In early 2009
there were underground rumors popping up their ugly head claiming it was over
between Muph + Plutonic. Not the
case even though they are working on some solo projects, but there is no loss
of love between the duo. They even brought their mate DJ Bonez along on their Don’t Worry About Nothing Tour.
Local celebrity Optamus from Downsyde opened up the night with a passionate set of solo rhymes, so much so that the crowd was severely amped up while awaiting for Muph + Plutonic to hit the stage.
Kicking off their set with funktastical Filthy Rich it is clear that Muph’s tag as lyrical genius is well deserved. Clearly the blue collar attendee’s connected with his unpretentious energy and raw talent as he ripped through a catalogue of their most popular tracks. As Muph enthusiastically launched into old favourite Heaps Good, characteristically everyone broke into the chorus, chanting loudly along.
While Plutonic kept beat on the drums while
DJ Bonez expertly mixed and Muph crafted a strong repertoire with punters, stemming
from years of experience. During Beautiful
Ugly it felt more like a Funk Club event rather than a stereotypical oz hip
hop show-there was no aggression- just head nodding rhythms and lively horns.
When the trio stepped off stage, it was a let down- which was quickly remedied when they stepped back on stage to perform their current single Don’t Worry About Nothing. Even without Jess Harlen’s live hauntingly sly back up vocals, the emotive lyrics and soulful beats were enough cement them as legends not only in the studio, but rocking the stage as well.
