DEADMAU5 = Dork. Have Dj's always been nerdy? Well, yea- yhe good one always have been ...
When you think about the DJ/artists that are successful enough to jet set around the world and play at the most exclusive venues with plenty of adoring fans, most wouldn’t assume this lifestyle belongs to a slightly socially awkward and computer junkie. Deadmau5 doesn’t fit the mold and that is ok. He plays by his owns rules, most of the time from behind the monitor.
“I’m a bit of a recluse. The internet has kinda been my life partner.”, which is still odd coming from one of the most in demand DJs out of Cananda. Just because he may have a minor addition to the internet, it doesn’t mean he is slow witted. Recently in he vented to a Clubmix reporter that 'they’re fucking cunts'. Don’t ask him about it these days, it’s the easier way to get shut down.
Moving onto to things he actually does want to discuss, how a stinky apartment was the inspiration for his moniker. “There was a mouse that managed to crawl into the back of my computer and expired on my video card. It stank up the entire apartment. I couldn’t figure out what it was but it eventually went away. A few months later I had to go in and change it and discovered it.”
But why the 5, why not be Deadmouse? “I spend so much time online and would recount the story to my friends on forums. Every time I would reenter the room [chatroom] people would just call me the dead mouse guy.” The 5 came about because chat networks only allow eight character usernames.
Back in the day computers could only spit out mini notes to old pieces of equipment, these days things have pleasantly progressed. “I was blown away when you could use wave drivers and sample your own music on a computer. Now it’s just fucking ape shit. Now you got crazy FM modular syntheses that sound almost better than a lot of this gear you would pay thousands of dollars for. Some coders just let go. It was my pull into it” Deadmau5 explained with a completely giddy tone. It’s is so obvious he is utterly in love with electronics.
Another gift from an internet playdate, Deadmau5 worked with American artist Kaskade on Move For Me. “Ryan [Kaskade] is an absolute sweetheart. I could count the lines of text exchanged [on my hand] on an instant messenger service. It was so cut throat”. There were no expectations, but the outcome was a commercial delight, it reached number one Billboard's Hot Dance Airplay Chart.
As for life after Good Vibrations, it’s completely to be determined, “As far as the rest of my future, I am pretty haphazardly running my career, crashing through windows.” Whatever works … computer man.
