IT’S music. It’s a
performance. It’s art it’s purist stage. What? No one can define what is
truly is, but there is one thing we do know- it’s strangely radical.
Regarded as one of the most eccentric and inspiring electro clash acts of this generation, as expected their shows are out of this world. At times they boast up 20 on stage dancers demonstrating their flair for theatrics. They aren’t holding back on their current North American tour, Casey explains “The show has a lot of videos, dancers and costumes. It’s meant to be a visual spectacle.” Given previous performances, there’s no doubt it a tantalizing experience for the senses. They don’t do anything small or in a predictable way, it’s not in their nature.
Although their cult status is on lock down, their mainstream endeavors weren’t always so fruitful. During their time with record giant EMI, resources were limited. Without the proper backing, the collective weren’t able to tour on the release of Odyssey. “We are actually doing more show s without EMI’s involvement than with themfrom a major label, is that a blessing in disguise? “It’s not a disguise; it is a blessing- without a doubt. We are getting more work done without a major label.” What more c.” Getting dropped ould an eccentric collective ask for, complete control without interference from a mainstream outlet and more success.
The duo always traveled to the beat of their own drum and these days seem to be paving the way. While artists longed for major representation, the industry is changing. Casey says, “It’s not a good time to be ruled by a major. Everything is ruled by panic and chaos. Everyone I know that is on a major wants off. Are the days of mass produced pop and major label domination over? “The way that people engage in entertainment these days is so different. You don’t need to engage in mainstream media. Artist can still build a really powerful and effective audience [on the internet] without needing to play that game.”
Entertainment is the first independent release from Fischerspooner. Shying away from signing another contract, the duo took some time to evaluate their needs. “We wanted to do something that was a little more artist friendly. We were looking for something that was more short term. We did not want to get in some big bidding war or a bunch of money up front. It took a while to figure out.” The space and time they took paid off, Entertainment proves to be a little less intense and possibly a bit more poppy. While some fans are embracing, others are trashing the mainstream element.
Casey responds, “Each record is always about trying to find a new sonic interpretation of our own style. To me, each one to me has its own flavour.” It is what it is, when it is- deal with it. True to form Fischerspooner is characteristically unpredictable, but still quite utterly brilliant.
