MARCUS Schultz, what a freaking legend. He’s been around for ages, but lately he’s really been making his mark on the international scene. Yassays.com chats to Marcus about returning for this year’s massive Future Music Festival line up, his exploits in Jordan and varied discography.
He's one of the very few North Americans to team up with Armin Van Buuren’s Armada label, it obvious that he has talent that is recognized across the globe. It’s so far reaching that Schultz was the first American allowed to perform in Jordan.
“It was one of the most memorable gigs I have ever had. We played until the sun came up, it wasn’t until then that we realised where we were. All around us was sand and hills with camels running across in the background. It was surreal.” Although there were many political complications, it didn’t faze Schultz, he sees himself as a citizen of the world with no need to tie himself to one country.
Having an uber successful international radio show, Global DJ Broadcast, has helped him hug the world with his heavy hitting European style trance. That doesn’t mean that he’s forgotten his underground roots, like his now legendary residency at the now infamous club The Works in Phoenix, Arizona. He brought trance to the wild west and is now spreading his emotional and melodic style to the most remote borders.
Having a diverse history of both artist and remix albums had lead Schultz to a having one of the most interesting discographies. Having remixed everyone from Madonna’s Love Don’t Live Here Anymore to Australian pop singer Sia’s Buttons, diversity is obviously the key to keeping Schultz in the game for so long. Of all the artists, our own Sia ranks fairly high as one of his favourites, “Right now a lot of the lyrics in trance are all about rainbows and unicorns. Sia just has these lyrics that cut really through. It is just a little more playful, I had a lot of fun. She’s a wild one too.” Schultz explains. '
In the early 2000’s Schultz released tracks under the name Dakota and 2009 is the year of Dakota’s return. “I just thought that putting out a new Marcus Schultz album now but I felt it would be a bit too soon. I also wanted to experiment a little bit more and have some fun in the studio with some big room, kinda darker stuff.” Anyone going into withdrawals can check it out at its debut at the Winter Music Festival in Miami, Florida.
As for Future Music, we may be in store for a bit of trouble. “I have been on the future tour for three years. So I think I am allowed to get away with a few things, get some new people into trouble.” Last year, Sven Bass was the bad boy, “There was plenty of trouble- how he survived the tour is amazing. Most of us would be sitting on the airplane praying that our heads would not explode, asking for ice packs. He would just jump on smiling.” It's the life of a dj…don’t hate.
